The question
A service reservoir draws down during repeated high-demand days. Should the utility increase storage, improve transfer capacity or revise operations? This is a hypothetical assessment, with no site-specific design recommendation.
Start with the time series
Compare inflow, outflow and usable storage over multiple operating cycles. Check whether the reservoir refills overnight. If the net daily balance remains negative, extra storage can delay depletion without resolving the underlying deficit.
Test the alternatives
- Check pump availability and the practical transfer window.
- Review control settings and upstream storage interaction.
- Simulate additional usable volume and enhanced replenishment separately.
- Compare combinations under normal and outage scenarios, including water-quality implications.
Report the governing mechanism
Explain whether the limiting factor is peak balancing, daily replenishment or contingency reserve. Use a common initial state and enough simulation time to avoid a favourable start masking the problem. Read the storage guide.
